Two major candidates for mayor of Omaha are getting ready for the 2017 election and have each hired some staff.

Mayor Jean Stothert, a Republican, has several longtime party stalwarts working for her as well as the former editor of a Nebraska political blog.

Her campaign manager will be Sam Fischer, a political consultant with a long résumé. Her finance director will be Beth Kramer, who worked for her 2013 campaign and Sid Dinsdale’s 2014 U.S. Senate campaign. As communications director, Stothert has hired Dave Boomer, who managed several political campaigns of U.S. Rep. Lee Terry.

Also working for her campaign are Scott Santamaria as field director, Jerry Kratochvil as digital director and Bill Protexter as general consultant.

Kratochvil is on a hiatus from running the Republican-leaning Nebraska political blog Leavenworth Street.

State Sen. Heath Mello, a Democrat who is challenging Stothert, has hired Paige Hutchinson, a former legislative aide, as his campaign manager.

Melissa Breazile, who has worked for various nonprofit organizations around the area, will serve as his communications director.

And Jim Crounse, who has worked on presidential campaigns as well as for U.S. Rep. Brad Ashford, will be Mello’s general consultant.
