Rain chances will increase throughout the Memorial Day weekend in the Omaha area, with showers and thunderstorms likely during the day on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Early morning Monday brings the best chance for showers, Valley-based meteorologist Paul Fajman said. That chance will diminish throughout the day, which is expected to bring a high of 83 and a low of 65.

“As the day progresses we should see the cloud cover begin to lessen a little bit,” Fajman said. “It won’t be a clear, sunny day, but it will be partly cloudy.”

There is a risk of flooding in southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa, depending on the amount of precipitation, Fajman said. A flood warning continues to be in effect along the Missouri River at Plattsmouth, Nebraska City, Brownville and Rulo.

Booming thunderstorms and heavy rain moved through the Omaha metro area Thursday night.

Heavy rain was reported in several spots. The heaviest rainfall reported to the weather service was 8.75 inches of rain 3 miles south of Red Oak, Iowa, in Montgomery County. A spot north of Red Oak reported 7 inches of rain. The Red Oak airport reported 3.5 inches.

Omaha’s Eppley Airfield reported 1 inch of rain. Plattsmouth and Tekamah both reported nearly 2 inches of rain.
