More than 1,000 Omaha Public Power District customers in Douglas County are without power Friday night.

Jason Kuiper with OPPD said an underground vault fire reported near 24th and Harney Streets about 5:45 p.m. caused the outage.

OPPD shut off five circuits before the Omaha Fire Department could extinguish the fire. Kuiper said the fire was out about 7:30 p.m.

Kuiper wasn’t sure how long customers would be without power. OPPD has to assess the damage before it can return power, Kuiper said, and that can’t happen until the area cools down.

He said the area primarily affected lies between 18th and 34th Streets to the east and west and Burke and Pacific Streets to the north and south.
