A segment of Giles Road in western Sarpy County is closing for construction.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Giles Road between 144th and 156th Streets will close until about August 2016, although it will reopen to traffic during the winter months.

The project will expand that stretch of Giles from a two-lane street to a three-lane street with a turn lane. It also will add a trail on the south side of Giles and a sidewalk along the north side of Giles.

During the closure, drivers are encouraged to use Harrison, 156th and 144th Streets as detour routes. The entrance to Chalco Hills Recreation Area will remain open throughout the project.

Officials have said the $2.6 million project will help handle increased traffic volume on that portion of Giles, which is expected to double in the next 20 years.
