A 22-year-old Omaha man died after a one-vehicle crash early Wednesday near 28th and Shirley Streets.

Austin Johnson was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in extremely critical condition, according to a spokesman for the Omaha Police Department. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Investigators said Johnson was northbound on South 28th Street after 12:45 a.m. in a 1997 Toyota Avalon when the vehicle left the roadway. The Toyota hit a stop sign, a fence and then a tree.

Johnson, the lone occupant, had to be cut out of the vehicle.

He was taken to the hospital with CPR in progress.
