An Internet fundraising campaign has been started to help with some expenses for the family of an Omaha firefighter injured in a mortuary fire last month.

Mike Terrell will need surgery to repair a crushed nerve in his neck, which he injured during the Jan. 26 fire at Heafey Hoffmann Dworak & Cutler funeral chapel, 7805 West Center Road. Terrell, who has been with the Omaha Fire Department for 18 years, was inside the building when the roof collapsed.

“Mike has learned that he has a crushed nerve in his neck between C5 and C6 and has not been cleared to return to work,” according to the post at https://www.gofundme.com/42qvay5g. “Mike’s goal is to get back to work quickly, but his physical injuries alone will prevent that for some time.”

The post goes on to say that because it was a work-related injury, medical costs are covered, but Terrell has many out-of-pocket costs associated with his long-term recovery. The post says Terrell’s wife, Becky, and children, Ben and Anna, have been taking time off from work and school to assist him.

As of Friday afternoon, $3,825 had been raised toward the $5,000 goal.
