If your live Christmas tree has, by now, seen better days, you can soon take it to the curb.
Area Boy Scouts are offering free curbside Christmas tree pickup in much of the metro area, starting Saturday.
This is the 20th year of the Scouts’ community service project that promotes recycling. After they’re picked up, the trees are taken to drop-off sites and ground up into fish habitat material for area lakes.
“This drive is a great experience for the participating Boy Scouts and provides a needed service for the community,” said John Shores, scoutmaster of Troop 282.
This year’s collections start Saturday and continue through Sunday, then resume New Year’s Day and Jan. 5, 6 and 12.
Scouts and adult volunteers will pick up trees from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day except Sundays. Sunday pickup will be 1 to 4 p.m.
Pickups must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. To schedule a pickup, go to www.scouting4trees.org or call 402-965-1458.
