Bits of a broken wheel cover sit in a huge pothole on 144th Street between Q and U Streets on March 11. That stretch of 144th was closed at the time because of the plethora of potholes.

Crews filled more than 5,000 potholes in Omaha in 10 days, Mayor Jean Stothert said Friday.

From March 18 to 27, the City of Omaha Public Works Department received 7,407 pothole reports. Many locations are reported multiple times, so the number of unique potholes is lower.

During the same time period, 22 city workers and 10 contractor crews filled an estimated 5,550 potholes.

Officials said the estimate is based on the 775 tons of asphalt that was used and the average size of repaired potholes, which the city said was 3 feet by 3 feet and 8 inches deep.

“We realize that many of our streets are old and have been neglected for about 50 years,” the mayor said in a prepared statement. “Right now, our priority has been to complete pothole repairs on major streets.”

When a pothole report is first filed, it can take eight to 10 days for a work order to be issued and crews to fill the hole.

Crews are working daily during the week.

They also worked last Saturday, March 23, and will work Saturday.

Stothert said she will continue to provide weekly updates about potholes on Fridays.
