The cause of death of a 54-year-old man whose body was found inside a vacant house near 16th and Lake Streets last month now is considered "undetermined."

Derek DeWolf's death at 1502 Willis Ave. on Jan. 8 was investigated by the Douglas County Coroner’s Office and police homicide unit investigators.

The case will be reclassified from a homicide to an undetermined death after a pathologist's review, police said.

DeWolf was a transient who frequented the Open Door Mission. People who attended a gathering outside the house a few days after he was found dead said DeWolf was a good man who had struggled with alcohol but also helped others with similar problems.

Police will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding DeWolf’s death. They are asking anyone with information about the death to contact police at 402-444-5656 or Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP.
