Martin Shukert

Martin Shukert served as Omaha planning director during most of the 1980s. He is photographed at West Farm on South 144th Street, just north of Pacific Street in Boys Town. In Shukert’s youth, this area was a dairy farm on the far reaches of the city. Today, it’s prime real estate for a $1.2 billion mixed-use development announced by Noddle Cos.

Tree removal was scheduled to begin today on 500 acres west of Boys Town to make way for development, according to Noddle Cos., the developer.

The site will become a combined commercial-residential development referred to for now as West Farm/South Farm.

The trees need to be removed by April 1 to comply with the federal laws that protect the nesting of migratory birds, the developer said in a press release.

A landscaping plan will bring in native trees and other plants to offset the loss of the removed trees, the company said.
