Seat belts saved the lives of a couple in an RV that went airborne on I-80, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The Michigan couple was westbound on Interstate 80 about midnight Saturday when they attempted to pass a semi-trailer truck near the Marne exit.

The driver lost control, and the recreational vehicle went into the median where it struck a high spot and went airborne. The vehicle landed on a concrete culvert and came to a rest on its wheels in the median.

Joseph Stachowski Jr., 70, and Judy Stachowski, 66, of Westland, Michigan, were taken by ambulance to Cass County Memorial Hospital shortly after midnight, according to the report by the Iowa State Patrol.

The Stachowskis were both wearing seat belts, and the patrol report indicates that doing so saved their lives.
