One person was killed and three others were seriously injured Tuesday in a two-vehicle traffic accident in southwest Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol said Marilyn Gruber, 84, of Shenandoah, Iowa, died in the 5:20 p.m. crash on eastbound U.S. Highway 34 in Mills County south of Council Bluffs.

Richard Gruber, 91, of Shenandoah, Christine Carpenter, 57, of Warrensburg, Missouri, and David Carpenter, 56, also of Warrensburg, were injured in the crash and taken to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha. Richard Gruber and Christine Carpenter were taken by medical helicopter to CUMC and David Carpenter was taken by Glenwood, Iowa, rescue squad.

The patrol said a 2010 Subaru driven by Christine Carpenter and a 2004 Chrysler minivan driven by Richard Gruber were both eastbound on Highway 34 when the Subaru pulled to the right to make a U-turn in front of the minivan. The vehicles collided head-on in the eastbound lane, said the patrol.

Highway 34 traffic was rerouted for hours while the patrol conducted its investigation into the crash.

An earlier version of this story had an incorrect age for Marilyn Gruber.
