Motorists driving outside the Omaha metro area over the lunch hour should be prepared for icy spots and dense fog.

Barbara Mayes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Valley, said a freezing fog settled over the region this morning, leaving some areas very slick, especially near bridges and overpasses.

The freezing fog may have been a factor in a fatal accident at 7 a.m. outside Valley near U.S. Highway 275 and Nebraska 64. The accident, which killed one and seriously injured a second person, remains under investigation. The name of the victims has not been released.

Patchy fog remains a problem in the region, including immediately around Omaha, Mayes said.

The weather service has issued a fog advisory for eastern Nebraska from the South Dakota border to Kansas and it includes Interstate 80 between Lincoln and Omaha.

Mayes said she expects the fog to begin breaking up this afternoon.
