The weekend’s weather will offer metropolitan area residents a chance to get outdoors — and a reason to stay inside.
Folks driving north or east tonight or Sunday should check road conditions before heading out, because of the potential for freezing rain in northeast Nebraska and in parts of Iowa.
In the Omaha area, mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 30s today will bring a perfect day for errands, a hike with the kids or a long jog.
Light rain is forecast to move into the metro area tonight and continue through the morning on Sunday, said Dave Eastlack, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Valley.
Eastlack said the rain probably will taper off during the afternoon in Omaha. Temperatures could reach 40 degrees on Sunday, and winds are forecast at around 10 mph.
With the potential to be chilly and damp, Sunday sounds like a guilt-free day to spend indoors.
In terms of weekend travel hazards, Eastlack said freezing rain is possible tonight in northeast Nebraska. After the sun comes up on Sunday, any ice should melt.
The weather service’s Des Moines office said freezing rain is possible tonight and likely on Sunday.
