DES MOINES — The number of new flu cases is declining, but the Iowa Department of Public Health said influenza activity in Iowa remains widespread.

There were 89 new cases of seasonal influenza in Iowa during the week of Jan. 13 through 19, compared with 120 the week before.

The percentage of outpatient visits that were for influenza-like illness declined for the second straight week — 3 percent compared with 3.6 percent the week ending Jan. 12.

However, almost 4 percent of school absences were due to illness compared with 2.8 percent the previous week.

During the same week a year ago, influenza activity in Iowa was considered sporadic, with just 16 positive tests for flu. — AP
