Firefighters battle blaze in Denison, Iowa

Firefighters from Denison, Iowa, fight a fire at Schau Recycling in the town. Heavy equipment from the company was used to move material so firefighters could get at the root of the fire.

DENISON, Iowa — Firefighters battled a fire in a scrap pile at Schau Recycling in Denison for two hours Friday morning.

Denison Fire Chief Cory Snowgren said an explosion within the scrap pile was the likely cause of the fire.

One Denison firefighter received a minor injury and is being treated at the emergency room at Crawford County Memorial Hospital.

Snowgren said the fire was close to valuable equipment, which the initial fire teams were able to save. Several citizens provided ice, Gatorade and water.

Tires and synthetic material in crushed cars at the site created thick, black smoke.

Snowgren said he happened to be on Seventh Street, saw the smoke from the scrap pile and called the fire in to the communications center at 8:09 a.m. The communications center received multiple additional calls.
