LINCOLN — Search teams have been deployed at the Tecumseh State Prison to find the source of homemade weapons used to assault two staff members over the weekend.

One staff member suffered a cut to a hand that required stitches Sunday after reaching through a door port to retrieve an item from a restrictive housing cell, said Dawn-Renee Smith, spokeswoman for the Department of Correctional Services.

The other staff member suffered a cut nose while responding to five inmates starting small fires in separate restrictive housing cells. The cut was not serious, Smith said in a press release.

“Safety is our No. 1 priority and search teams have been deployed ... to locate and identify the source of the weapons,” said Corrections Director Scott Frakes.

The incidents will be investigated and reports will be given to prosecutors to determine if charges can be filed, Smith said.
