Omaha police have arrested a man on suspicion of shooting a 6-year-old boy.

Fabian Jefferson, 27, and the boy were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center early Saturday with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening. Jefferson was later arrested by police on suspicion of felony assault.

Officers responded to reports of the shooting at an apartment complex near North 93rd Avenue and Maplewood Boulevard about 5 a.m.

The boy's mother, 36-year-old Michelle Sides, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP or at omahacrimestoppers.org. — Kelsey Stewart
