A man who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at a northwest Omaha apartment is believed to have been a kidnapping suspect whom authorities were attempting to arrest, Omaha police said.

Deputy Police Chief Ken Kanger said the Metro Area Fugitive Task Force was attempting to arrest a man at the apartment Thursday when someone from inside fired at officers.

Authorities retreated to safety, Kanger said, and as they did, they heard more gunshots. Authorities went to the apartment on a tip that a man wanted on a 2018 kidnapping warrant from California could be found there.

The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. in an apartment complex near 65th Street and Sorensen Parkway.

No one else was in the apartment, Kanger said.

As is the case when someone dies while authorities are attempting to serve an arrest warrant, a special team that investigates “in-custody” deaths will look into the shooting, Kanger said.

The man’s name will be released after next-of-kin are notified, he said.

After the shots were fired, police evacuated the apartment building and locked down two nearby schools.

By late afternoon, parents were being allowed to pick up students at nearby Roncalli Catholic High School and Nathan Hale Middle School, Kanger said.
