Gothenburg, Nebraska, police officer found dead in apparent murder-suicide

A Gothenburg, Nebraska, police officer and her husband died this weekend in an apparent murder-suicide, according to Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman.

Officer Jill McCandless, 53, and her husband, Jeff, 52, were found dead in their home Saturday evening by a relative, Waterman said in a statement.

Autopsies have been scheduled, and the investigation is ongoing.

Jill McCandless had served on the Gothenburg Police Department since 2010, becoming the third woman on the force, according to a story posted by the Gothenburg Leader.

The Nebraska State Patrol is in charge of the investigation, and the Dawson County Sheriff's Office and Gothenburg Police Department assisted at the scene.
