A former Lincoln police officer was convicted of first-degree sexual assault by a Lancaster County jury on Friday.

Gregory Cody will be sentenced Aug. 29 and faces up to 50 years in prison.

A 30-year-old woman told state investigators that Cody coerced her into having sex with him about 65 times over a year and a half. She said she feared that he would place her in emergency protective custody if she refused. People can be placed in emergency protective custody if they are considered mentally ill or dangerous.

Cody was on duty and showed up in his uniform for most of the sexual acts, according to a court affidavit.

The Lincoln Police Department released a statement Friday that said when department officials became aware of the allegations against Cody, they suspended him to conduct an internal investigation. Cody resigned two days later
