HASTINGS, Neb. — A former Hastings High School teacher accused of having sex with a female student was sentenced Wednesday to one year in county jail for each of two misdemeanor offenses.

The sentences will be served at the same time.

As part of a plea deal, Johnathan Shafer, 39, pleaded no contest in December to contributing to the delinquency of a child and committing child abuse negligently without injury.

Shafer previously faced a charge of first-degree sexual assault of a child.

Initially Shafer was accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl in the summer of 2012. The victim later told police that she had been mistaken about the timing and that she was 16 when they had sex in the summer of 2013.

Nebraska prohibits people 19 and older from having sexual contact with those younger than 16.
