A 25-year-old mother has been arrested after leaving her two children in an unlocked car while she went shopping.

The woman, of Council Bluffs, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of child endangerment.

Council Bluffs police said they were called to the row of stores near 24th Street and Interstate 80 about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

A woman had seen the two children, ages 2 and 4, alone in a car and gave them warm shelter in her vehicle until officers arrived.

The children had been in their mother’s car, which was unlocked, not running and had a window partially rolled down, for about 45 minutes, officers said.

They both were wearing only light clothing. Officers noted that the temperature outside at the time was 5 degrees, with a -15 degree wind chill.

The mother was arrested after returning from the Boot Barn store. The children, who were not injured, were placed in protective custody.
