A 29-year-old Council Bluffs man was charged Monday with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his grandmother.

Jacob C. Heyer is accused of fatally injuring 71-year-old Karen Fort, according to a statement from Council Bluffs police. Fort died Friday after being injured in August.

An autopsy found Fort's cause of death to be blunt-force trauma to the head.

Heyer was served with a first-degree murder warrant Monday at the Pottawattamie County Jail.

He previously was charged with willful injury and violation of a restraining order in connection with the August attack. He was awaiting trial.

Police were called to Fort's home at 2119 Avenue K at 9:45 p.m. Aug. 27 to investigate a disturbance. Officers located Fort with several injuries to her face. She was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in serious condition.

Heyer was located across the street but refused to talk to officers. He was taken into custody on suspicion of violation of a restraining order that had been sought by his grandfather, Ron Fort, who was in the residence at the time of the assault.
