A 33-year-old man died after being shot by a Bellevue police officer overnight Thursday.

The man who died was Matthew Christian Smith of Bellevue, according to the Bellevue Police Department.

The officer who fired his weapon was Officer Cody Albrecht, who has been with the department since February 2016.

Bellevue police went to a home near 30th and Sandra Streets, north of Childs Road, about 11:30 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report of someone who was armed. A woman told a 911 dispatcher that her partner was drunk, armed and suicidal, police said.

As officers were heading to the house, they were told that shots had been fired, police said. When they arrived, officers heard shots near the home.

Albrecht was able to get the woman out of the home and shot Smith shortly after that, police said.

Bellevue Police Lt. Andy Jashinske, a department spokesman, said he didn’t know how many shots were fired.

Smith was taken in extremely critical condition to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he died.

Neither the woman nor any police officers were injured, Jashinske said.

Albrecht has been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard practice in officer-involved shootings.

The La Vista Police Department is investigating the shooting with help from the Douglas County crime lab.
