16th and Victor shooting

Omaha police on the scene after a shooting at 1634 Victor Ave. on Wednesday that killed 22-year-old Jarrell Haynes.

Police on Wednesday booked a 26-year-old woman on suspicion of being an accessory to a felony in the slaying two weeks ago of a man in northeast Omaha.

Secretia D. Benton was arrested in connection with the March 2 shooting death of Jarrell Haynes, a police spokesman said.

Police did not describe the underpinnings of the allegation, and Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine declined to comment. A murder suspect has not been booked in the case.

Benton has never been charged with a felony in Nebraska courts or U.S. District Court.

Haynes, 22, who law enforcement officials have said was associated with the Victor Street Bloods street gang, was shot to death at 10:45 a.m. when he went outside to smoke a cigarette at his grandmother’s house at 1634 Victor Ave.

A law enforcement official has said Haynes’ homicide is not connected to the double murder trial of Charles Trotter. It occurred as the trial was underway, and Haynes was a cousin of Marcel Lovejoy, one of the victims who Trotter is charged with killing.
