Weld County, Colo., voters will be casting ballots this fall on whether to pursue seceding from Colorado, a tactic that communities in the nearby Nebraska panhandle have also explored.

The Weld County Board voted unanimously this week to place a 51st-state initiative on the ballot. Weld and other northeastern Colorado counties have expressed interest in seceding to become North Colorado.

A new state would have to be approved by the State Legislature and the U.S. Congress, making the secession votes mostly symbolic.
