As you may have noticed in the past couple of weeks, we enjoy comparing times and distances in track and field.

Since the state track meets concluded May 19, The World-Herald has published final season leaders, comparisons of the top Nebraska and Iowa performances from this year’s state meets, and comparisons of the top all-time Nebraska and Iowa marks in each event.

My final endeavor is running the updated western Iowa all-time girls and boys track leaders.

Those lists have been faithfully kept by World-Herald writers who came generations before me, and I’ve been privileged to keep them under my watch since 2000.

Keep in mind that the athletes listed are those who were considered in The World-Herald’s western Iowa coverage area when they competed. That coverage area has shrunk through the years, as you can see.

One other detail to note: For several years in the 2000s, I misguidedly was taking 0.24 seconds off fully automatic times in an attempt to better compare them to the hand-clocked times. I finally realized that was wrong : automatic times are the most accurate possible. So I went back through and painstakingly corrected those automatic times to reflect what the athletes actually ran. The hand times, then, are rounded up to the next tenth. If you see any mistakes, please let me know at kevin.white@owh.com.

If you’re like me, your mind will wander when you analyze these lists.

For instance, in the boys 100 meters, imagine Greenfield’s Chuck Hoyt settling into the blocks in 1910 for what would have been the 100-yard dash back then. Or Denison’s Jack Saggau in 1934. Those two have managed to stay on the list despite all the advances in track surfaces, footwear and training techniques.

At the top of that 100 list, Carroll’s Adam Haluska ran a wind-aided stopwatch time of 10.09 in the Ram Invitational in Jefferson on April 15 , 2002. It was rounded up to 10.1 and remains Iowa’s all-time best.

Many rightfully are skeptical of the top hand-clocked times. Humans using stopwatches, along with potential confusion about markings on local tracks and extreme wind gusts make timing the 100 especially, and even the 200, inexact sciences.

For instance, the No. 2 time on the western Iowa list (and tied for second on the state’s all-time list) is the 10.2 run by Brady Wall of Sergeant Bluff-Luton last year.

I asked Sergeant Bluff coach Monte Larsen about that time on Saturday, because it’s not listed on Iowa’s Quik Stats website, and I couldn’t find any other documentation of it.

Larsen said it was run at a meet in Homer, Nebraska, with an enormous tailwind at his back, perhaps in the 40 mph vicinity. The Warriors aren’t acknowledging it as their school record, and Wall asked that it not be submitted to Quik Stats. We are listing it because there are no wind provisions in high school meets and because plenty of other sprint times likely were recorded under highly favorable conditions.

At any rate, just understand that the shortest races are always the most difficult to compare.

There were nine girls additions to this year’s all-time charts. Highlighting the list was Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln’s Darby Thomas, who went an all-time western Iowa best 19 feet, 5 inches in the long jump at state, breaking the 47-year-old record of 19-2¾ set by Nishna Valley’s Kay Bruce .

East Mills junior Janette Schraft was responsible for three new marks, ranking fourth in the 1,500, sixth in the 3,000 and eighth in the 400 hurdles.

There were 10 boys additions. Glenwood’s Nate Kennedy ran a western Iowa all-time best 48.28 to win the 3-A state 400 meters and also cracked the 200 list. Atlantic’s Gratt Reed made the top 10 in the 110 and 400 hurdles, while teammate Chase Mullenix made the 800 list and was a member of the 1,600 relay and distance medley relay teams that also found spots in the top 10.

Chase’s father, Matt, is still third on the 800 list from his days at Woodbine. Chase has one more year to try to gain household bragging rights.

Western Iowa All-Time Track Leaders

Schools listed are those recognized as within The World-Herald’s coverage area at the time of the performances. Some times have been converted from yards to meters. Handheld times have been rounded up to the next tenth of a second. Sprint medley relay not listed, as it’s in its second year of existence. This year’s performances are bolded.
