When racing in the same event eight days after posting a personal best time, a bit of a letdown can be excused.

Even with that exception, Isabella Pantano had a terrific day Saturday at the Elkhorn Swimming and Diving Invitational.

The Omaha Marian junior posted a career-best time in the 100-yard backstroke at last week’s USA Swimming Winter Junior Nationals West in Austin, Texas. Pantano touched in 54.62 seconds, a time that is 0.05 seconds faster than the state record of 54.67 set in 2017 by Clara Walstad of Lincoln Southwest.

But because the Junior Nationals are not part of the high school schedule, that time cannot count as a state record. What Pantano did Saturday, though, did move her to No. 2 on The World-Herald’s all-time Top 10 backstroke list.

Pantano touched the wall at Elkhorn’s Common Ground in 55.40, making her the second female swimmer in state history to finish the 100 backstroke in under 56 seconds. Not bad for an early-season swim with no rest.

“I wasn’t as rested, and this is an old suit, and I wasn’t shaved or tapered,” Pantano said. “So I think it went really well. I had a really good mindset about it.”

Pantano also didn’t have much rest before her swims in Austin. She only rested for two-and-a-half days.

“I was really nervous, and I think I used that to my advantage,” Pantano said. “I think I had a better racing mentality than I have in the past because I really wanted to do well. I want to do well all the time, but I really wanted to see what I could do.”

Pantano also won the 100 freestyle Saturday in 54.76 and was a member of the Crusaders’ quartet that set a meet record of 1:46.06 in winning the 200 medley relay. Maddie Clark, Jocelyn Randby, Pantano and Amanda Allberry bettered the previous record by 2.35 seconds and now are No. 6 all time in that event.

Randby also debuts at No. 7 all time in the 100 breaststroke after setting a meet record in 1:03.98. The sophomore also had a career-best time in Austin in that race of 1:03.62 that would put her at No. 5 all time.

Marian won the girls team title with 642.5 points while host Elkhorn/Elkhorn South edged Lincoln Pius X 447-387 to win the boys title.
