The final invitational of the regular season Saturday helped position several swimmers for better lane assignments for next week’s conference championship meets.

Elkhorn’s 12th annual February Fete Fling reshaped the season leader charts in both boys and girls events as less than three weeks remain before the state championship meet Feb. 21-23 in Lincoln.

Lincoln Pius X and Fremont made some of the biggest gains on the girls charts while three meet records were bettered on the boys side of the meet at Elkhorn’s Common Ground.

The biggest jump came from Fremont junior Emma Walz in the 50-yard freestyle. Walz won Saturday in 24.67, which moves her into second place behind Omaha Marian’s Jocelyn Randby on the season leaders list.

Beatrice sophomore Mikwena Lierman moved to fourth place on that same list by finishing second Saturday in 24.82.

Walz also led the Tigers’ 200 freestyle relay team to a victory in 1:40.98 with a 23.89 anchor leg. Fremont stands third behind only Lincoln Southwest and Marian on the season leaders list. Pius finished second Saturday in 1:42.31, which moves the Thunderbolts ahead of Lincoln East into fourth on the leaders list.

Pius quartets also moved up the leaders list in the other two relays ahead of Friday’s prelims in the Heartland Athletic Conference meet in Fremont. The Thunderbolts are now fifth in the 200 medley relay and sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Elkhorn/Elkhorn South won the girls team title and finished second to Omaha Creighton Prep in the boys meet. The Stormin’ Antlers scored 573 points with Pius finishing second (407) and Omaha Duchesne third (297).

The Junior Jays, despite missing many of their top swimmers because of another school activity, outscored the Stormin’ Antlers 467-398, while Pius finished third with 327 points.

Grand Island sophomore Jonathan Novinski and Prep’s Rush Clark were responsible for the three meet records. Novinski touched first in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.62 to replace the 1:59.06 by Prep’s Ryan Tate from 2015 in the record book.

In the 500 freestyle, only the first name needs to be changed: Novinski replaced his brother Daniel as the meet record holder by winning in 4:41.51, more than seven seconds faster than Daniel’s time of 4:49.17 in 2015. Clark also won the 100 freestyle in 47.01.

Clark, the state record holder in the 100 butterfly, also knocked Tate out of the record books. The Prep junior won the 100 fly in 50.11, 0.27 seconds faster than Tate’s 2015 mark.
