FORT DODGE, Iowa — Creston’s Taylor Briley got her team off to a promising start Wednesday with a first-inning solo home run.

But the Panthers would get only one more hit the rest of the way as Fairfield took the Class 4-A first-round game.

The Trojans did most of their damage in the third inning, stringing together three two-out hits for three runs, including Sara Trent’s RBI double. Fairfield added single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Fairfield pitcher Alli Deao, meanwhile, settled down after the first inning, allowing only a fifth-inning infield single by Saige Rice.

Creston drops to the consolation bracket, where it will play Perry at noon Thursday.

Jordan Trowbridge’s two-run home run in the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie, and Boone pulled away by scoring seven runs in the last two innings.

Heelan got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Lexie Stolen singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on Elsy Meis’ single. The Crusaders closed the gap to 4-2 in the fifth when Ellie Cropley’s double drove in Abbie LaFleur, who had walked.

Boone answered with a two-out, four-run rally in the sixth. The first run scored when Caitlynne Shadle reached on an error that would have been the third out. Breanna Hunter then hit a two-run double. Pinch-runner Ellen Castle moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on another error.

Ashley Furst’s three-run homer in the seventh inning closed the scoring for Boone.

Boone plays Carlisle in an 11 a.m. semifinal Thursday. Heelan takes on Charles City at 10 a.m. in the consolation bracket.
