Class B: Elkhorn South, Gretna, Hastings, York win state softball openers

Gretna scored five runs in the final two innings to beat Lincoln Pius X 6-5.

Elkhorn South 9, Elkhorn 5

Two home runs by Morgan Nixon and a third by Taylor Knight powered the top-ranked Storm to its first-round victory. McKenna Becker had three hits and scored three runs, and Olivia Ferrell came on in relief to earn the victory with three innings of one-hit ball.

Gretna 6, Lincoln Pius X 5

The No. 2-ranked Dragons gave up three runs in the top of the first inning and trailed 5-1 into the sixth inning. That’s when the Dragons rallied for four runs to tie the game before a two-base throwing error by the Thunderbolts in the bottom of the seventh brought home the winning run. Alexa Sedlak had a pair of solo home runs for Gretna.

The Dukes broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead. North Platte didn’t go quietly, though, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth, including a three-run single by pitcher Taylar Coleman. Nebraska recruit Karlee Seevers struck out eight and scattered five hits for the win.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the second, the Tigers scored six in the bottom of the third, including a grand slam by freshman Ellie McCoy. Winning pitcher Olivia Douglas struck out six and gave up just one hit while also hitting a double and home run.
