A youth movement led a Saturday sweep for the state’s top side.
Top 10 No. 1 Omaha South earned decisions over Omaha Burke and South Sioux City — Class B’s top-ranked team — as part of a double triangular at Collin Stadium.
Of the Packers’ five goals on the day, a pair of sophomores accounted for three and a freshman produced another.
“A lot of our younger guys stepped up,” South coach Joe Maass said. “Our youth has good finishing potential.”
Omar Fregoso, a sophomore, scored in both matches. His second-half strike against Burke was the match-winner.
Fregoso got the Packers going in their second match, putting away his second of the day in the seventh minute.
Senior David Salazar’s strike from the box in the 31st minute put South up 2-0 before freshman Emanuel Palga added another two minutes later.
The Packers held South Sioux City without a shot in the first half and finished with a 14-3 advantage for the match.
“The first game was a little rough and then we played better the second game,” Maass said. “I like what I see so far. It’s early for sure. And we’re aiming for the end of the year, so we’re not going to go out of this weekend and think, ‘Oh man, we just won two big games,’ because we still have a long way to go and a lot of season left.”
South Sioux City also lost to Class A No. 3 Omaha Creighton Prep 1-0 earlier in the day. The match’s lone score came on a Duncan McGuire second-half penalty kick.
The Cardinals won’t have much time to regroup. South Sioux City visits Class B No. 4 Omaha Skutt on Tuesday.
“We’ve still got a lot to work on,” Cardinals coach Lupe Gonzalez said. “Our conditioning wasn’t there. We’ve got to get our touch back. We just weren’t on today at all. We just need to reset and come back strong.”
Prep capped the day with a 5-0 win over Burke. The Junior Jays got two more goals from McGuire, giving the junior forward four through Prep’s first three matches.
