Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln vs Ankeny Centennial Girls State Soccer

Players battle for the ball as Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln took on Ankeny Centennial.

DES MOINES — Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln coach Robbie Miller thought his team could challenge No. 1 Ankeny Centennial’s back line.

But afterward, there was no use beating around the bush.

“That is far and away the best team we’ve played all year,” Miller said. “It’s like running into a buzz saw. They’re a really good team. I would not be surprised if they win it all.”

On Thursday evening, the top-ranked Jaguars overwhelmed the unranked Lynx in a 7-0 Class 3-A girls state quarterfinal at Cownie Soccer Complex, ending Abraham Lincoln’s first state run in 16 years.

The Lynx held on by the skin of their teeth for the first 14 minutes to keep the match scoreless. A header off a corner kick went wide, keeper Rilee Filip made a big save and defenders Taren Newman and Alexis Pomernackas both poked the ball away at close range.

But then the Jaguars scored four goals between the 15th and 20th minutes.

By the end of the match, six Jaguars put the ball in the back of the net. Defender and Nebraska signee Olivia Brown led the way with a pair of headers off corners.

“Attackingwise, they just kept playing switches, and it was hard for us to transition, so we got beat a lot on the counterattack,” Lynx midfielder Hope Riche said. “The corners were pretty bad, too.”

With the win, Ankeny Centennial (18-2) moves on to the semifinals to play fourth-ranked Waukee (14-4). The Lynx closed the season 13-7.
