Taking care of a familiar face put Schuyler into a familiar place.

The Class B No. 3 Warriors beat seventh-ranked Norfolk Lutheran/Catholic for the second time in 14 days, this time a 2-0 victory in Wednesday’s opening round.

The win, Schuyler’s fourth in three seasons over the Knights, lifted the Warriors into Friday’s 9 a.m. semifinal against second-ranked South Sioux City. It’s their fifth appearance in the semis in seven seasons.

“I thought it looked like we had fresher legs than the first time we played them,” Schuyler coach Lyn Beebe said of Wednesday night’s effort. “I think we’ve got a little experience down here, too, that helped us tonight.”

Ernesto Chacon found the left side of the goal on an angled shot from the right in the 38th minute to give Schuyler a lead just before the break. It was just the second goal of the season for the junior.

Beebe said he saw his team find another gear following the score.

“I think after that goal we really picked it up after that, too,” he said. “We didn’t stop, and that was important.”

Edgar Romero added an insurance goal before the midway point of the second half on a wonderful individual effort. Romero made a forward run into the box, broke down a Knights defender, got around and blasted a low shot for his eighth of the year.

“I thought we played a little more offensive,” Beebe said. “We had seen a lot of really good teams at the end of the year, and we just started being more defensive and more defensive. I think our midfield kind of picked up and moved the ball forward a little better tonight than they had. Our forwards up top played off each other quite well.”

Norfolk Lutheran/Catholic coach Kevin Miller admitted his team showed some nerves early. The Knights were making their first trip to the state tournament.

“They just out-hustled us a couple of times, got some nice looks and buried them,” Miller said. “We knew Schuyler was a good team.”

Schuyler, meanwhile, is back into the semifinals, where the Warriors lost a season ago. They fell 3-0 to semifinal opponent South Sioux City in last week’s sub-district tournament.

“It’s just belief now,” Beebe said. “I think if they believe that they can play with South Sioux City they will.”
