Trendell Dawkins became No. 17 on Monday.
The 6-foot-3, 285-pound offensive lineman from Omaha Creighton Prep received a scholarship offer from South Dakota State. That makes him the 17th in-state recruit in the 2019 class to receive a Division I scholarship offer to play football.
A visit to South Dakota State for their junior day on Feb. 3 and constant contact from assistant coach Dan Jackson have the Jackrabbits squarely in Dawkins' sights.
"Coach Jackson was by school on Monday with the running back coach (John Johnson)," Dawkins said. "They have a good program, and I really like their coaching staff. When I went on the visit I was able to connect with their offensive line coach (Jason Eck) and I like him."
Dawkins is strong with a max bench press of 350 pounds and a max squat of 555 pounds. He is being recruited as an interior offensive lineman, although he'll play some defensive line in the fall.
"I've been working on getting strong and my agility during the offseason," Dawkins said. "I'm also working a lot on technique things."
This summer Dawkins is planning to camp at South Dakota State and South Dakota with potential trips to Kansas State, North Dakota, North Dakota State and Northwest Missouri State for their camps.
Dawkins is looking for a good football environment and somewhere he can grow and be welcome with new opportunities. It's something he is hoping to provide as a senior leader on the 2018 Junior Jays.
"I get motivated by helping our younger players get better and being a positive player," Dawkins said. "Football should be something you really enjoy.
