WYNOT – With returning Elite Eight guard Lexis Haase bottled up over the final three quarters, preseason Class D No. 1 West Point GACC needed somebody to step up in an early-season battle of defending state finalists.

For the final time, in their all-red uniforms, they walked across the red plush carpet laid across the track to their school bus. The uniforms and the bus-ride tradition are being retired in Friend. The Bulldogs played their final football game Wednesday, losing 34-10 to Wynot in the Eight Man-2 second round.

Throughout the summer, The World-Herald will prepare you for the high school football season with a story previewing a new team or teams each day. This week, Eight Man-2 is featured, with Nos. 10-5 today.

No. 2-rated Wynot earned its seventh consecutive appearance in the Class D-2 state championship game by rallying for a 43-39 victory over No. 1 Falls City Sacred Heart Friday afternoon in the state tournament semifinals at the Devaney Sports Center.

Class D No. 2 Wynot used a 17-2 burst to close the second quarter and open the third, then held off a late push by fourth-ranked Chambers-Wheeler Central for a 56-46 win in the opening round of the girls state basketball tournament at Lincoln Southwest.

The Wynot defense took it from there as they shutout the Exeter-Milligan offense in the second half and went on to win the Class D2 State quarterfinal match-up by the final score of 62-32.

If the final two minutes of the first half didn't shut the door on Lawrence-Nelson in a second-round Class D2 playoff game here Tuesday afternoon, the Wynot defense did.
