Recruiting report: Norfolk Catholic speedster Dylan Kautz

Dylan Kautz attended Nebraska's Friday Nights Lights Camp at Memorial Stadium but has yet to receive a walk-on offer from the Huskers.

Norfolk Catholic running back Dylan Kautz has made four unofficial visits to Minnesota — twice for camps, and two times to see spring practices and visit with the coaching staff.

On Sunday, Kautz received a Maroon offer — better known as a grayshirt. That means Kautz would be a walk-on his first season, then move to a scholarship player after that.

"It's pretty cool to have a power conference school want you to play football for them," Kautz said. "The energy up there is crazy."

Kautz has built a strong relationship with the Gophers coaching staff.

"All of the coaches get to know you on an extremely personal level," Kautz said. "They know you just like your family or friends would."

At 5-foot-9 and 178 pounds, Kautz has run an 4.44-second 40-yard dash multiple times. At Nebraska's June 22 Friday Night Lights camp, Kautz ran that time twice.

A star on the football field and track, Kautz is a three-time state champion in the 100 and 200 meters with a personal best 10.67 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.63 seconds in the 200.

Kautz is clearly on the radar of the home-state Huskers. He made several unofficial game day visits to Memorial Stadium last season, but has yet to receive a scholarship or walk-on offer from Nebraska.

His other scholarship offer is from Division II Sioux Falls. Division II schools Bemidji State, Wayne State, Augustana and UNK are all recruiting him as a running back.

"The bigger schools like Minnesota are recruiting me as a slot receiver," he said. "The smaller or Division II schools see me as a running back."

He is working on his strength and route running this offseason and hopes to help Norfolk Catholic earn a Class C-2 state championship a year after winning a Class C-1 title.

"We want to go 13-0," he said. "We return some guys but we will need to have some guys step up like we did last year."
