IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Grand Island Senior High wrestling team got all it wanted and was successful.

The Islanders went 4-1 to finish second at the Iowa City West Dual Tournament Saturday.

“It was a really strong dual tournament and we got what we wanted and that was tough, solid competition,” GISH coach Mike Schadwinkel said.

Grand Island started the meet with a 43-27 victory over Wilton, Iowa, then defeated Mason City, Iowa 46-17.

The Islanders suffered their only loss to Oak Park River Forest, Ill., who is ranked No. 10 according to the Amateur Wrestling News, 46-19.

Grand Island bounced back and wrapped up the tournament with wins over Iowa City West 33-27 and St. James Academy, Kan. 36-21.

Billy Thompson, ranked No. 4 at 152, was the only Islander to go undefeated at 5-0.

“He had a great day for us,” Schadwinkel said. “He really got after it and beat some ranked kids from other states. He’s been looking very good for us.”

Javy Silva, Haris Talundzic, Chase Reis and Matt Bolan all went 4-1 for the Islanders.

“It was a balance team effort. When you wrestle a tough tournament like this, you are going to get some losses,” Schadwinkel said. “It’s hard to single out anybody. I thought at times we stepped up and we could have done a little better. Overall, I thought the kids performed very well against some very good competition.”

Grand Island will be back in action for the Newton Tournament of Champions in Newton, Kan. Friday and Saturday.
