Duke girls top Centura

Junior Hannah Riley of York runs head-first into the Centura defense on a drive in Tuesday's game on the Dukes' home maples.

YORK - The Duke girls earned a 49-31 win over perennially strong Centura in hoops Tuesday night in York.

Coach Matt Kern's Dukes clung to a 9-7 lead after one period, then went up 20-9 at halftime and looked like they would show Centura their heels the rest of the way.

The Centurians had other ideas and staged an impressive run top open the second half. The visitors had the Dukes rocked back on their own heels as they charged to within a point, 20-19, with a 10-zip run to open the third.

That's when Kern called timeout to talk, but not about scoring.

"We weren't doing well in the post. We weren't defending." After that was corrected, he said, "We hit a couple shots" and the ragged patch was over just like that.

Riley hit a two at 4:48 of the third to make it 22-19 and Liz Harlow added an offensive rebound stickback, 24-19.

A driving layup by Erin Malleck put York up 26-21 and the period ended 31-23 Dukes.

Then it was York's turn to catch fire, which the Dukes did with a lightning-bolt 12-0 run. The pivotal stretch saw Riley hit a three at 7:16, another at 6:35 and then watch Malleck drain another trey with 4:54 to go.

In no time at all the Dukes were up 20 points, 43-23. Down the stretch senior Aleah Rosenau scored on an assist from Riley, who then planted two in the net herself on an assist from Taylor Peterson.

Riley's 23rd and 24th points were the last two of the game for York, which improved to match Centura at 8-5 on the season.

"She got in a rhythm," said Kern of Riley's stroke in the second half. "Liz had a big shot, too," he said, as did Botts and Malleck who broke double digits with 10 points. "It was a good team win."

The Centurians shot 100 percent from the free throw line in the game, but unfortunately that was only good for four points (4-4). The Dukes got to the line nine times and hit six. Centura had one more 2-pointer than York, 12-11, but the Dukes buried their guests from behind the arc with seven threes to Centura's two.
