GENOA — The host Twin River Titans took a 10-point lead after the first eight minutes and held off Cross County in boys’ hoops Thursday.
The Cougars played the Titans more or less even the final three periods, but couldn’t get those 10 points back.
A Ross Eller pivot move inside for two brought the Cougars to within nine at 42-33 Titans with 3:04 left in the game, but Cross County only came up with one point the rest of the way and lost 49-34.
Cougar senior Caleb Tweeten hit a three in the first period that accounted for his team’s fifth point, but by then the Titans already had 14 on the home side of the scoreboard. The period ended 17-7.
Buckets in the second quarter by Eller and Joey Arkel with an offensive rebound stickback made the score 25-13 with 3:20 left until halftime.
Eller hit a two in the last minute of the second period and the half ended 27-15 Titans.
Tweeten struck from downtown at the third period horn, but his 3-pointer from the corner still left the Cougars on the wrong end of a 39-26 score with only eight minutes left.
Eller’s slick move to get Cross County inside double-digits behind in the fourth was answered on the next Twin River possession with a Titan two and the Cougars were unable to challenge again.
Twin River won with 14 2-point field goals and a trio of threes. The Titans went to the line 28 times on the night and coverted 12 of those chances. Cross County got as many points at the line as they did with 2-point field goals at 14 each. Tweeten’s two treys accounted for the balance of Cougar scoring.
“I can’t fault the effort at all,” said Cougar coach Dan Conway. “We just have to limit turnovers and we didn’t make enough free throws. Twin River’s tough to guard, they’ve got so many shooters,” he added. “We did a good job rebounding,” dispite a noticeable size disparity between his Cougars and the Titans. “I was really worried about our rebounding.”
The win was Twin River’s ninth against four losses ahead of their visit Tuesday from Wisner-Pilger. Cross County fell to 1-10 with the loss and will host David City tonight.
