The Gering softball team went 2-1 Friday in the Aurora Invite. The Bulldogs, who were competing for the first time this season, cruised past Aurora 9-1 in their first game of the day before holding off St. Paul 6-5.

What happened was a showcase for a variety of wide receivers on both the North and South teams. Every other year, it seems, the game alternates between a ground-based contest for 1970s purists and a game for fans of today’s spread offenses. Both teams on Saturday operated out of traditional pro-style (and primordial-style) sets, but the 457 combined passing yards made for an air show.

It was a barn burner in Cozad Thursday night as the Haymaker boys and girls both won tight games over Gothenburg.

Conor Young needed to remember his brother’s advice. The Cozad quarterback fumbled on his first touch of the playoffs and set Fort Calhoun up in prime field position to get on the board.

Cozad’s defense helped the Lady Haymakers maintain a consistent lead throughout a three-set sweep of Sutherland on Thursday, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22.

It’s a word that was close to Kearney Catholic player’s mouths during an offseason where they replayed last year’s collapse to eventual C1 state champion Cozad. They gave that one away on their home field.
