The Hemingford and Bridgeport girls basketball teams advanced to the championship game of the Class C-2, Sub-district 12 Tournament after posting semifinal wins on Tuesday night at Sidney High School.

Entering this season, Bridgeport head wrestling coach Craig Johnson was faced with a problem many coaches would like to have. A deep combination of talented upperclassmen and promising newcomers re turned for the Bulldogs. It was Johnson’s job to get all of the pieces in the right places.

Bridgeport scrapped its way to a physical 48-42 win over Perkins County in the boys SPVA title game on Saturday at North Platte Community College. Led by a game-high 22 points from Andrew Nelson, No. 3-seeded Bridgeport (14-2) upset top seeded Perkins County (11-4).

A fast start powered the Kimball girls basketball team to a 63-21 rout of Perkins County in the first round of the South Platte Valley Association Tournament on Monday night in Kimball.

Allie Boggs scored 20 points and the Gering girls basketball team held Bridgeport to just nine points in the second half in registering a 48-29 win on Monday night at Bridgeport High School.

Nine individual medalists combined to help the Alliance wrestling team capture the championship of the Bridgeport/Sidney Invitational on Saturday at Bridgeport High School.

Banner County Schools hosted its annual invitational tournament in Harrisburg on Saturday with 12 teams coming out to compete. Out of those 12 teams, the Panhandle held the tops spots with Morrill placing fourth with 70 points, Bayard third with 85 points, Hemingford second with 115 points, and Bridgeport coming out on top with 121 points.

For the second straight year, the Bridgeport volleyball team captured the championship of the Western Trails Conference Tournament on Saturday in Morrill.

The Bridgeport football team improved its season record to 5-3 on Friday night after downing Bayard 53-6. Bridgeport coach Jerrod Dean was excited after last week’s 20-0 win over Hershey and felt his players built on that success Friday night.

A big third quarter powered the Bridgeport football team to a 42-21 season-opening win over Southeast on Saturday evening in Bridgeport. Leading 14-13 at halftime, the Bulldogs erupted for 20 points in the third frame to build a commanding 34-13 advantage. The teams traded touchdowns in the final quarter.

At an imposing 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Wyatt Pankowski is easy to spot in the Bridgeport High School football team’s backfield. Trying to get him on the ground isn’t such an easy task for opposing defenders who are willing enough to get in the path of the powerful and bruising running back.

While most Class C high school boys golf teams around the Panhandle were hit hard by graduation last year, that wasn’t the case for the Bridgeport Bulldogs. The Bulldogs returned four of their five varsity positions this spring and head into next week’s opening tournament with plenty of high expectations.
