Bayard girls hold off Bridgeport

BAYARD — Megan Stuart ignited for 22 points Friday, and the Bayard girls basketball team held off a surging Bridgeport squad 41-40 at Bayard High School.

“That was probably the most emotion I’ve shown in a ball game for a while,” Bayard coach Roger Russell said. “It was good. I told them if we can keep the ball in the half court, we can beat them in the half court, and that’s what we did tonight.”

The win lifted Bayard’s record to 4-13. Bridgeport dropped to 6-9.

Both teams started sluggishly in the contest. Bridgeport led just 6-4 after the first quarter.

However, Stuart anchored a 10-3 run with six points to start the second frame, giving Bayard a 14-9 advantage.

Bridgeport senior Dina Cantu, though, put the Bulldogs back in front 15-14 at the 2:19 mark of the stanza, hitting a bucket and following it up with an old-fashioned three-point play after getting fouled.

Stuart, a senior who scored 10 of her 22 points in the second period, sparked a 6-0 Bayard run late in the period with a pair of buckets. Rachel Frerichs then nailed a bucket as the Tigers took a 20-15 lead into the break.

The Tigers held strongly in the third, outscoring Bridgeport 8-4 to take a 28-19 lead into the final 8 minutes.

Bayard held a 33-26 lead at the 3:26 mark of the fourth quarter before Bridgeport’s Olga Aguilar nailed a 3-point shot to pull the Bulldogs to within four, 33-29.

Bayard matched Bridgeport shot for shot up to the 1:50 mark before Aguilar hit another trey to cut the deficit back to four. The Tigers jumped back out to a 41-35 lead on a bucket by Kaylie Fiscus with 55 seconds left to play.

Aguilar, though, didn’t go away. The senior nailed her third 3-pointer of the period to cut the Bayard lead to 41-38 with just 21 ticks left on the clock. However, a pair of free throws by Bridgeport in the waning seconds weren’t enough as Bayard prevailed.

Bridgeport was paced by Sidney Faessler, who finished with 15 points and three 3-pointers. Aguilar collected 14 points with three treys. Fiscus added eight points, while Haley Sauer was 4 of 6 from the line in the fourth quarter and ended with six total points.
