Joe Maass said he has mellowed after two decades as a head coach. “In general, I’m a lot calmer. I had a chip on my shoulder. I was going to show them. I was a young cocky kid. As the years have gone on, I’ve realized it’s not about me, it’s about the kids. It’s not about the winning, but do they go on to college?”

Packed house

Coach Joe Maass' Packers and Omaha Creighton Prep packed the stands at Creighton's Morrison Stadium for the 2019 state final. “Look at the crowds they draw at the state tournament,” Kearney coach Scott Steinbrook said. “It’s impressive to see how the South Omaha community comes together to support their soccer team, and Coach Maass deserves a lot of credit for that.”

State title

Omaha South coach Joe Maass is drenched with water after winning the 2013 boys state soccer title. Maass has won three championships with the Packers and was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 2013.
