MITCHELL – The Bayard wrestling team enjoyed one of its best performances in a Class C district tournament in school history, earning a third-place finish Saturday in the District 4 Tournament at Mitchell High School.

In fact, Bayard, which scored 115 points, was only three points shy of claiming a runner-up finish. Southern Valley took second with 118 points, and Valentine ran away with the title with 228.5 points. Also in the top 10 were Bridgeport in sixth place with 89.5 points and Mitchell in seventh place with 86.

Bayard coach Randy McKibbin said he was proud of the way his wrestlers battled throughout the two-day event.

“I think the kids just have pride in what we’ve tried to establish here in the last few years, and they didn’t want to let their buddies down,” he said. “They were wrestling for each other.”

McKibbin, who’s been coaching wrestling at Bayard for 16 years, said the solid unity on his team has contributed to the squad’s success not only at districts but throughout this season.

“They get along well. They’re a team,” he said. “It’s one of the funner teams that I’ve coached in almost 30 years of coaching because they’re good guys.

“They want to do well for each other and not just for themselves.”

Adding to Bayard’s excitement Saturday was that six Tigers qualified for next week’s Nebraska state tournament in Omaha. Leading the way was senior Tristan Hunter, who was Bayard’s lone champion. He pinned Sargent/Burwell’s Tyler Gideon in 2:38 in the 220-pound title match. Hunter, a three-time state tournament qualifier, improved his record this season to 30-2.

“He’s had a great run so far this year, and he definitely wants to have more,” McKibbin said. “He did really well. It’s probably the best tournament he’s had this year.”

Bayard had two runner-up finishers – Alex Araujo at 113 and Zaine Gallegos at 285. Alex Wamboldt placed third at 195. Placing fourth for the Tigers were Mitch McKibbin at 106 and Felipe Palomo at 170.

Bridgeport was led by Joe Weibert, who placed first at 138. Jerrod Fedorchik was second at 182. Steven Tafoya at 120 placed third. Placing fourth for Bridgeport were Ronnie Brown at 113 and Lawrence Schneider at 152.

For Mitchell, Drew Gilliland won the 126-pound championship, and Braydon Wiedeman claimed a title at 182. Darryn Walters was fourth at 120.

Kimball’s Clay Keller was second at 132, and Gordon-Rushville’s Micah Scherbarth was third at 160.
