Cameron Riggs, top, of St. Pat's, grasps the leg of Trent Steinkraus, of Plainview, in their quarterfinal match at 132 pounds in the Class D State Wrestling Tournament at the Century Link Center in Omaha. Riggs defeeted Steinkraus 8-2.

OMAHA – Two St. Pat’s Irish will experience something new tonight.

Senior Kam Jordan and junior Aaron Allison will both wrestle in the semifinals of the Class D State Tournament for the first time. They will join Cameron Riggs, a defending state champion.

“Three kids in the semis is pretty good. Coach [Kevin] Wood was wanting that and we got to that point,” Jordan said. “We’re just hoping to advance to the finals.”

At 138 pounds, Jordan (44-4) made quick work of his quarterfinal match against Jesse Schmit, of Randall, pinning him in 36 seconds to reach the semifinals.

“It’s going to be good just to be out there on the mats and not have to worry about wrestlebacks,” Jordan said. “Going into the semis is a pretty big deal for me. I’m so thankful for everyone supporting me and God giving me my ways. I just can’t wait to get out there on the mat.”

Jordan faces Sean Mendlik (38-5), of Bishop Bergen, tonight, a rematch of a quarterfinal match in 2015, which Mendlik won.

In his opening match, Jordan earned a 15-0 technical fall at the 5 minute, 40 second mark over Edwen Baptista (18-13), of Friend.

At 145 pounds, Allison (43-5) also made quick work of his quarterfinal match, pinning Tanner Coufal, (35-11) of Howells-Dodge, 30 seconds into the second period.

“He made a mistake and I capitalized on it and pinned him,” Allison said.

Allison faces Devon Walker (51-5), of Elm Creek, tonight in the semifinals. Walker pinned Jared Atkeson (33-5), of St. Mary’s, in the quarterfinals.

“This is going to be my first time. This is going to be fun,” Allison said. “I need to keep calm and not worry about it. It’s just going to be another match and I’ll do my best.”

Riggs (45-0) pinned Breidyn Cumpston (20-14), of Amherst, in 1 minute, 31 seconds to reach the quarterfinals and then defeated Trent Steinkraus (33-10), of Plainview, 8-2 to reach the semifinals.

The St. Pat’s sophomore remains undefeated in his high school career after winning the title at 113 pounds in 2015.

Tonight, Riggs faces Chandler Stone (38-11), of Sutton.
