Tough defense, Lucy Turner’s jumpers help Lynx avenge loss to rival Jackets

Abraham Lincoln's Lucy Turner, second from right, splits between Thomas Jefferson's Allison Schubert and Allisa Schubert, right, as she drives to the basket.

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Last month, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln’s 26-game girls basketball win streak against Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson was snapped in dramatic fashion, on Hannah Belt’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.

“We’ve been thinking about that ever since we lost,” Abraham Lincoln junior Lucy Turner said.

The 5-foot-11 Turner led her team with 17 points and nine rebounds as the Lynx avenged that setback with a 38-32 Missouri River Conference victory over the Jackets Thursday at the A.L. Fieldhouse.

Most of Turner’s damage came near the foul line from 13 to 17 feet in the middle of Thomas Jefferson’s zone.

“We thought if we could put Lucy at that spot, she’s pretty close to automatic at that 15-foot spot,” A.L. coach Chad Schaa said.

The Lynx improved to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in the MRC, while Thomas Jefferson dropped to 7-7 and 3-4.

The six-point final margin tied for the game’s largest. With just more than three minutes to go, Thomas Jefferson trailed 35-32. It had four 3-point attempts to tie but couldn’t make any of them.

Thomas Jefferson finished 12 of 44 from the field, including 2 of 13 in the fourth quarter.

“It’s execution. If as a team we don’t decide to execute the things that they’re asked to do, then it’s going to continue to be frustrating,” said T.J. coach Devin Schoening, whose team has lost five of six after starting 6-2. “We can’t give up 38 points and lose by six.”

Abraham Lincoln helped its cause by outrebounding the Jackets 33-20. Kayla Schleifman, a 5-11 sophomore, grabbed a game-high 11 boards. Junior Julia Wagoner, a 5-7 guard, drew the assignment against Thomas Jefferson leading scorer Allison Schubert (16.8 points per game) and held her to nine points on 4-of-16 shooting.

“Julia is our defender,” Schaa said. “When we need somebody to get stopped, we put Ju on her. She gets after it. I bet those two girls are going to sleep well tonight.”

Allisa Schubert, Allison’s twin sister, had a strong performance for the Jackets with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals.

“Alissa did a nice job,” Schoening said. “She’s so strong. She’s such a tough competitor. What I appreciate about her is that when she is fully engaged in what we’re doing, she flat gets after it.”

With the game being moved from Friday to Thursday because of the winter weather threat, Schaa said his team fared well with only one day of preparation for the Jackets. He said the Lynx hope to build on the momentum as they tackle the final third of the regular season.

“We’re heading in the right direction,” he said. “We’ve just got to keep putting in that time and effort in practice. We haven’t had our best game yet, but it’s coming.”
