LOGAN, Iowa — It took the entire game, but IKM-Manning showed Friday night why it has only one loss this season in softball.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Iowa Class 2-A No. 2 Wolves (15-1) shut out Logan-Magnolia in the final six innings and erupted for six runs in the seventh to beat the No. 9 Panthers 6-2 Friday night.

IKM-Manning continued to get runners on base after the first inning, but Lo-Ma’s Reanna Rife got out of jam after jam. The Wolves left nine runners on base through the first six innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Payton Sporrer’s catch on an all-out sprint and Paige Gaskill’s diving grab at second base seemed to give IKM-Manning an extra boost.

Those plays “got us going, and we were just one hit away in any given inning,” IKM-Manning coach Joy Gross said.

One night after winning her 100th game for IKM-Manning jersey against Riverside, Peyton Gross started out with some nerves but quickly found her rhythm, striking out nine and giving up just two hits and no runs after the first.

“That’s who Peyton Gross is,” Joy Gross said. “She is really good between the ears. It just seems like her focus just narrows as the game goes along.”

IKM-Manning took control in the seventh. A throwing error scored the first run for

IKM-Manning and a blooper to center by Sammy Halbur made it 2-2. The flood gates opened from there.

Sporrer bunted to score Gross to give IKM the lead, and two more bunts that were misplayed scored two more runs to make it 5-2. Another throwing error one batter later scored freshman Zoey Melton for the final score of 6-2.
