MAPLETON, Iowa — West Sioux’s leading scorer last season, Morningside recruit Taylor Rodenburgh, hasn’t played all season because of an ACL injury.

West Sioux’s leading scorer this season, 6-foot senior Abbie Ericson, fouled out with 2:52 remaining after scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Her team led 50-48.

The 11th-rated Falcons didn’t flinch, making several clutch plays down the stretch to nip No. 14 IKM-Manning 58-54 in a thrilling Class 2-A, Region 8 final Wednesday at MVAO High School.

“What I tell my girls is, ‘I’ve got all the faith in the world and all the confidence in the world if you’ve got confidence in yourself,’’’ West Sioux coach Adam McVay said.

The Falcons (21-3) earned their second trip to state, following their 2012 appearance. They earned the eighth seed and will face top-seeded Treynor (22-1) in a 6:45 p.m. state quarterfinal on Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Treynor beat West Sioux 74-52 in last year’s regional final.

IKM-Manning (18-5) just missed its sixth trip to Des Moines in 10 years.

The Wolves led the entire second and third quarters, but Payton Schwiesow’s go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining gave West Sioux the lead for good at 50-48.

IKM-Manning, which ranked 83rd among the 95 teams in 2-A this season with a 52.1 team free-throw percentage, struggled again in that area, making 9 of 22 (40.9 percent). Coach Gene Rasmussen said his team practiced them plenty in the last few weeks.

“I wish I knew,’’ he said.

The Wolves still had plenty of chances down the stretch. Shauna Reitan nailed a 3 from the wing with just more than a minute to go to pull IKM-Manning within 55-54.

After West Sioux turned it over, Reitan missed a 3, and then Peyton Gross’ driving attempt rattled out after a Gabby Cadwell rebound. The Falcons rushed the ball down to Meghan Danielson, who converted a layup for a three-point lead with 14 seconds left.

IKM-Manning called timeout with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Kia Rasmussen’s 3-point try caromed off the rim. Danielson rebounded and made the second of two free throws with 1.8 seconds left, clinching the win for the Falcons.

“We didn’t do a good job defensively in the second half,’’ coach Rasmussen said. “They started doing the things that they like to do, and we couldn’t take them out of it.’’

IKM-Manning graduates six seniors: Kia Rasmussen, Reitan, Gross, Payton Sporrer, Paige Gaskill and Katelyn Crawford. Sporrer led the Wolves with 17 points, while Reitan and Gross had 10 apiece and Rasmussen, the coach’s daughter, added eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

“It’s very hard,’’ coach Rasmussen said. “They’ve been a great group all the way through and even better leaders this year, both on and off the floor. Good group to be around. It’s going to be tough, losing those guys.’’
